How do I improve my English? Students ask this all the time. It seems hard at first but there are lots of little things you can do to make it easier.
Try to read something small every day –a newspaper or a magazine article, there are plenty online. Find an article about something you’re interested in or read about something you’ve already read about in your language. This will make the vocabulary easier to understand. Don’t worry about understanding every word; it’s much more important to get the general idea.
Watch movies in English, with English subtitles if you need them. Try to get used to listening to people speaking English. Don’t stop with movies, listen to songs in English and even sing English songs at karaoke or in your bedroom if you’re shy.
Write something every day too. You can write a blog in English or update your facebook. If you don’t feel confident sharing your English writing just yet, then keep a diary. You can keep a diary of things that happen to you or you can write about something else, like things you’ve read or seen in English. This will help you to reuse any new vocabulary you’ve learnt which will make it easier to remember.
And finally, speak English every chance you get! Don’t worry about being perfect or making mistakes – your main aim is to communicate. The best way to improve is to practice as much as you can. Don’t worry if the people you practice with aren’t native speakers or aren’t perfect either – you can improve together. Most importantly, try to enjoy it. You always learn more if you’re having fun, so relax and give it a go.
